Institute

The Institute of European Art History (IEK) unites research and teaching in the fields of architectural and visual arts history, new media, and popular culture, as well as the field history. A variety of methodological approaches converge around a shared interest in cultural-historical contextualisation. Our work covers Europe and European-influenced cultural spheres, as well as transcultural interconnections from the early Middle Ages to the present day.

The field is fully represented, with a particular focus on medieval architecture and treasure art, art and the public sphere, the connection to political history, Italian art, the history of art history, film, music videos and the phenomenon of forgery. Practice- and career-oriented teaching assignments complement these areas, offering courses in historic preservation, museums, the art market, digital humanities and drawing.
